We all like to add some nice images to spice up our sites and blogs. None of us carry a stock of images at home to use them as we wish.One way or the other we will have to find some images on line. Finding free good quality images is not as hard as you think. Yes I am talking about free images without copyright issues.

Why Are We Worried About Copyright

Well, to start with, it’s not right! It is not ethical to use some other persons work with out thier consent. Common sense right?
So you think you could get away with using just one photo.Just this one.Well Have a look at this site.TinEye It is a revers image search engine. Anybody can easily trace their images back to see the online usage of it and trace it back to you. Embarrassing if that happens. Isn’t it?
Not only embarrassment, sometimes they can cause costly legal issues.

It is obvious we have to steer away from copyrighted stuff ! So, how do we find our free, legal images?

There are varies ways to get images for you without copyright issues. Royalty free stock images is only one of them. Let’s have a look at all of available methods.

Free Images

There are sites providing good quality free images without any copyright issues at all. http://www.freeimages.com/ is one of them. They boast that they hold over 388,954 images in their site.

Google image search

In old google image search we had to individually check each image for copyright states. Not anymore !. Google came with this nice search tool to make our life easier.

Just select the option right for you to filter images according to copyright states.

Public Domain

Works in the public domain are those whose exclusive intellectual property rights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable – Wikipedia

Translated to our language, no copyright issues with these type of images. Wikipedia it self is a public domain.

Another free project of Wikipedia group, where users are free to use any of the site’s photos, audio, videos, and other media freely.

2. Flickr: The Commons

Commons is a Flickr feature for pictures from The Library Of Congress, Powerhouse Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and Flickr users who have pictures with no copyrights.

3. Microsoft Office free images and clipart

Microsoft provides this public domain of images and clip arts free to download for anybody.

4. U.S. Government Graphics and Photos

This site containing hundreds of thousands of public domain images, linking to multiple image categories.

5. Public Domain Pictures

Another huge collection of public domain pictures well organised.Users can upload and download free pictures.

6. Public Domain Photos

Another public domain collection. Banner says 5000 images and 8000 clip Arts.

Royalty Free Stock Images

At last we are here. Royalty free stock images are a way of getting hassle free good quality images for your website from specific providers.

Wikipedia says- Royalty-free, or RF, refers to the right to use copyright material or intellectual property without the need to pay royalties or license fees for each use or per volume sold, or some time period of use or sales.

Photographers provide their pictures to these sites. Many of these photographs have given away copyright restrictions or licensed under creative commons public domain dedication. This means you can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission. However, some photos may require attribution. These are some of the sites.

1. Pixabay

Pixabay is quite popular and provide large collection of royalty free stock images neatly organised into categories and taks
The website has an advanced search feature which allows you to narrow down your search.

2. StockSanp.io

Another user friendly well organised website with advance search features. Rich in good quality photos and graphics

3. Morguefile

This site’s best feature is its excellent search tool. You can filter by categories, keywords, size, rating, even colour, so it’s easy to bypass irrelevant shots and zoom in on the photos you need. Morguefile’s licence is generous and no registration is required.

4. Skitterphoto

Skitterphoto offers high resolution royalty free photographs. All images on the website are licensed under CC-0 public domain. The site features works of theirs own photographers so you will find less used and unique photographs.

5. Openphoto

One of the pioneers in the field. They have a well organised massive collection of photos. Easy to search and automatically provide related photos.

6. Pickup Image

Nice collection of images and clip art. Nicely organised and is with a good search engine.

Last notes

  • Obviously, this list is growing everyday. I have just laid out some of my favourites.
  • Do your own search and read carefully about copyright requirements. Don’t just take my word !
  • As a curtesy, Where ever possible, give attributes to original artist.
  • Take home message: there are more than necessary resources to get free images for us. So, no need to violate copyright at all.
