Hi there, welcome. I know why you are here. Either you have just heard of Search Engine Optimization and want to learn more about it, or really frustrated ’cause your site is not ranking as you wish. That is despite of having quality content.Believe me, I know all about it!
WordPress promoters always say that it is a system well optimized for SEO and you got nothing to worry about. Well that’s not completely true. Yes it has covered most of the site wide aspects to make it “Search engine friendly” but not as optimized as you’d think.
So WordPress SEO needs to be tinkered. WordPress on page SEO is a DIY project you can do yourself and I’m writing this post to give you the necessary tools.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
Let’s keep it simple shall we?
SEO simply means making your site post or page visible on the first page of google search results for a specific topic you have covered.
(If you want to know a more detailed definition for SEO, check this Wikipedia definition.)
So how does Google decide who come on to the first page?
Web is a huge library and I am just adding another page to this ever growing library by posting this. Clever Google people have developed softwares to Crawl and Index the information in this library so they can access the perticular information when people search for perticular words. These words people use to search are called “Keywords”. They play an important role in Search Engine Optimization. Google pick these keywords and go through there index to see which sites are best optimized for those words and put them on display.Get it !.
Read this post to learn about keywords more!
Here is an example.
WordPress Onpage SEO is only a part of it!
Optimization is done in many ways mainly you could divide this into two main aspects.
Off site SEO is a separate topic and this has to be covered separately. So lets keep it on the side for the time
On site SEO can be further divided into two arms.
Site wide optimization is usually done by plugins. I use Yoast SEO for my WordPress SEO settings and I like it. There are many more free SEO plugins which would do this effectively for you. If you want to learn more about global settings and how to configure the plugin go to there site for more information.
Now let’s get on with WordPress on page SEO
Keyword is the Key
Select your keywords carefully. It is a matter of hitting the right balance between right keyword and staying away from the dog fight. Always try to avoid generic keywords. Let’s say you want to sell birthday cards that you make. If you use Birthday cards as your keyword phrase you will be easily beaten by giant card sellers in the market. Your chance of getting some visitors to your site is higher if you use a more specific keyword phrase like handcrafted home made birthday cards . They are called long tail keywords.
Did you get this? If you have any questions just ask!
Choosing your keywords is the most important and vital part of the optimization. It indeed is the starting point of your WordPress on page seo effort. Now that you know how to select your keyword let’s optimize your post.Let’s break it in to several steps.
8 Steps of WordPress on Page SEO
- Start with url
- Optimize meta
- Content optimization
- Add optimized visual content
- Use links generously
- Page load speed does matter
- Go mobile friendly
- Get social
Start with url
It is very important to include the chosen keyword in your permalink. (In Yoast SEO you can set the permalink to show the post title which most likely will carry the keyword). Permalink(url) appear in your browser address bar. It is also shown in google search page under the post title. As you can see in the image, the keywords are in bold.
You can edit your url by clicking on the “Edit” button at the end of url on your Edit post window in WordPress.
Note that keyword “Royalty free images” are in bold in url and the meta
Title is used by users as well as google to see what the page is about.Add keywords to the title. Better still to the beginning of the title. Make sure title is wrapped with h1 tag. In WordPress this is done automatically.Try to keep your title under 55 characters. One more thing. Use only one h1 title in the post!
2. Meta description
Write a nice meta description to convey a summery of your page to the reader in split seconds. Include the keywords in meta. It will be shown in bold in google (See above image). Google will see the keywords to see what the post is about.
Content is the king they say and it is very true. There are various aspect of content that needs to be looked at and optimized. Most of your wordpress on page seo is content related.
1. Quality and long content.
Firs of all, your post should have at least 300 words. Otherwise google can penalize you for your post been “too thin”. Your should make an effort to post quality authentic content. Cut and paste is no good. You will be black listed if you keep on with bad habits like that.
2. Keywords to subheadings
Add keywords to subheadings like h2, h3 etc. At the same time be mindful that they are to be read by humans. No point of creating meaningless headings for the sake of keywords!
3. Keyword density
This is what google has to say about stuffing keywords.
“Keyword stuffing” refers to the practice of loading a webpage with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google search results. Often these keywords appear in a list or group, or out of context (not as natural prose). Filling pages with keywords or numbers results in a negative user experience, and can harm your site’s ranking. Focus on creating useful, information-rich content that uses keywords appropriately and in context. — Google
Stuffing keywords is not only harmful it makes your post looks ugly. My advice is to keep the keyword density around 0.5 and 2.5%.
4. Keyword in the first paragraph
Introduce the keyword as early as possible in the first paragraph after heading.Sooner google knows what your post is about is the better.
5. Bold and italic keyword
Make some of the keywords bold and italic
Add optimized visual content
Your post should carry different format of media.Photos, videos etc. That would keep your readers interested in the post.
Make sure they carry an ALT tag which has the keyword. Try to add keyword of the post to the image name as well. Edit your image details in the image library or when you add an image.Learn how to add an image here.
Use links generously
1. Outbound links
Add outbound links generously to well known sites related to your topic. That increase the quality of the contents you have. Here you can see I have added links to Google, Yoast and Wikipedia.
2. Internal links
Link you new post to relevant posts in your site. Preferably high ranking posts. Make sure you add a link to your home page as well. Be careful not to over do it.
Page load speed does matter
Even though this is somewhat beyond your control, it is well worth mentioning it.75% of users would not revisit a page that takes longer than 4 seconds to load. If your current hosting service is slow get in to a different host. Read how to choose your host here. I am currently with Siteground and will strongly recommend them to you.
Go mobile friendly
More and more people nowadays browse internet using mobile gadgets.Google are aware of this and strongly favour mobile friendly sites. Responsive sites. Make your site as responsive as possible. If you are not using responsive themes in WordPress, use plugins to get the job done. It is as important as WordPress on page seo.
Get as much as social media friendly and some more!. Make sure your posts are sharable.Facebook, google+ twitter shares and likes are quite important and they also drag new visitors to you as well. Who knows, some of them might even provide good inbound links!
